We wanted to let you know how Pivot may be able to assist your clients/members during the games. Our Olympic Defence Team is offering the following services:
- Olympic Rights Card: We have an Olympic rights card which contains basic legal rights information that everyone should be aware of. It also has the legal hotline information. Please let me know if you want us to drop some off at your office.
- Free Legal Hotline: We will be running a free legal hotline during from February 8 to March 1, 2010. The hotline will be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is intended to assist any person whose rights are affected by increased law enforcement during the games. Anyone who calls will have immediate access to a lawyer who will be able to give them free legal advice. The phone number is (604) 724-9529. IMPORTANT: you may want to tell your clients to write this number on their arm or their leg so that it is available to them at all times, especially if they are detained or arrested.
- Free Legal Representation: We will have a lawyer at the courthouse throughout the games to see clients who are in jail and assist with bail hearings. Please tell your clients that if they are in jail during the games, they can call the Pivot Legal Hotline and also they can ask duty counsel to track down the “Pivot lawyer” who will be somewhere in the courthouse (during business hours). We may not be able to assist them with their entire case, but we will certainly be there to try to get them out of jail.
- Know Your Rights Workshops: We have been offering workshops for DTES residents in the lead up to the games so that they are aware of their basic legal rights. We are still available if this is of interest to your clients and/or your staff.
